Letter from Nelson to Lady Hamilton, 10 April 1804.

Nelson to Lady Hamilton, Victory, off Toulon, 10 April, 1804, (Harrison II, 26; extract in Nicolas, V, 491), on Horatia.

Nelson rejoices that Emma and Horatia have now recovered their health. He confirms that the amorins (shawls?) will go to England in the care of Captain Layman, who has now been acquitted of all blame for the loss of his sloop. Due to the situation with Spain, this letter may never reach Emma, but he has written more fully in letters that will be conveyed on the ARGUS. Nelson refers to the news about the Mameluke chief Elfi Bey being pursued into the desert in Egypt. In recent days the French fleet has made brief appearances outside the harbour at Toulon and if this game continues, Nelson’s ships will someday catch them and the campaign will be over. He is glad to hear that Emma will be taking in Horatia to be educated. She will turn out to be an angel if she minds what Emma says to her, and his sister's daughters Eliza and Ann will never forget her kindness. Nelson says that his health is so-so, he will get through the summer and come home in the winter. He says Emma will readily fancy all that he would say and think. He sends his kind love to all friends.
