Anonymous letter, dated from May 3rd 1861, from HMS BACCHANTE, Vancouver Island, addressed to "Dear Mother". The anonymous author, an ordinary sailor to judge by the level of literacy, requests his mother inform him of the amount of half pay she has drawn while he has been away, and also provides comments of Valparaiso and the Eskimo Indians he has encountered on his voyage.
