Gunnery exercise book, circa 1859.

Gunnery instructions. Illustrated notebook, giving details of several different types of guns, missiles and firing techniques, including Valenciennes stars, quickmatching, and Dr Cruickshank's composition. The presence of a range of gunnery problems and their solutions marks this as a standard exercise book from HMS Excellent, whence Hereford qualified as a Gunnery Lieutenant before 1860, but the illustrations are more extensive and much finer than the average. In particular, the illustrations for the 'Congreve' rocket and launching equipment are both unusual and very detailed.
