Some of the papers relate to his cadet days, and are mostly printed magazines and programmes; there are also two gunnery notebooks, 1914, and a report on the organization of the Ramillies. The collection contains some items relating to other members of the family.

Son of Admiral R.S. Phipps Hornby (q.v.), Windham Mark Phipps Hornby entered the Navy in 1909. After his time at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne and Dartmouth and in the training ship Cumberland, he was appointed midshipman in 1914 in the Hampshire, moving to the Warspite in 1915. He was promoted to sub-lieutenant in 1916, joined the Ramillies in 1917, was promoted to lieutenant in 1918, to lieutenant-commander in 1925 and retired in 1932.
