Administrative / biographical background
Peter Rainier was born in 1784, the son of John Rainier and his wife Susannah Rainier. He entered the Navy in 1798 and as a junior officer served under his uncle Admiral Peter Rainier (1741-1808), commander-in-chief in the East Indies. Between 1803 and 1804 he was a lieutenant in his uncle's ship, HMS TRIDENT. Rainier was promoted to captain in 1806 and commanded HMS CAROLINE in the Java campaign. During the action against a Dutch squadron at Batavia on 18 October 1806, the CAROLINE captured the frigate MARIA RIGGERSBERGEN. In the following year she captured the Spanish treasure ship SAN RAPHAEL off the Philippines. Between 1813 and 1815 Rainier was in command of HMS NIGER, engaged on convoy duties in the Atlantic, during which she assisted HMS TAGUS in the capture of the French frigate LA CERES. Rainier was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1815 and appointed naval aide-de-camp to King William IV in 1830. From 1831 to 1835 he was in HMS BRITANNIA, off the Dutch coast and in the Mediterranean, with periods as flag-captain to Rear-Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm. He died at Southampton in 1836.
