James and Robert Guthrie were brothers, both surgeons in the Royal Navy. James qualified as a surgeon in 1800 and his naval service included the SPEEDY (1800- July 1801) and the IMPERIEUSE (1806 - 1811) while they were commanded by Lord Cochrane. His last employment was on the Spencer (1814 - 1815), and he died in 1862. Robert qualified as a surgeon in 1819. His naval service included the DIAMOND (1824 - 1826), commanded by Lord Napier, the UNDAUNTED (1827 - 1829) under Captain Clifford, and the SERINGAPATAN (1829-32).
