Austen family papers
The collection holds papers relating to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Francis William Austen (1774-1865) and Rear Admiral Charles John Austen (1779-1852), both brothers of the novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817).
The papers of Francis William Austen cover almost all of his active service from his entrance into the Royal Naval Academy in 1786 until the end of his commission as Commander-in-Chief in the West Indies in 1849. They include official log books, 1795 to 1814; letterbooks, 1801 to 1814, 1845 to 1848; order books, 1807 to 1813, 1829 to 1848 and loose papers, which are mainly general remarks and notes.
The papers of Charles John Austen contain a complete series of sixty-three diaries that he kept between 1815 and 1852.
