Administrative / biographical background
Bernard Currey entered the navy in 1876. He was promoted to midshipman in 1877, sub-Lieutenant in 1881, lieutenant in 1882, commander in 1895, captain in 1901 and rear-admiral in 1910. He served in the Egyptian War, and was awarded the 5th class Medjidie. He was aide-de-camp to King Edward VII, 1909–1910, and to King George V, 1910–11. He served during World War I as second in command of the 5th Battle Squadron in the Channel Fleet, 1913-1915, and was the Senior Naval Officer in Charge of Gibraltar, 1915-1917. He retired in 1919.
