Administrative / biographical background
Robert Lionel Foster (1870-1952) of Egton Manor. In 1922 HMS VICTORY was placed into dry dock for extensive repair guided by the Society for Nautical Research. She was placed in dry-docked at Portsmouth following the launch of a national appeal - the 'Save the Victory Fund' - to restore and preserve her in her Trafalgar condition, shorn of later additions. The ship was refloated for the last time on 8 April 1925 to adjust her cradle and so that her waterline was level with the top of the dock.
