Administrative / biographical background
From the bound manuscript report of the survey of the defences of the Channel Islands carried out under the direction of George Legge, Lt. General of Ordnance and later Baron Dartmouth. The volume was said to have been with Legge in the 'Gloucester' frigate when she was wrecked off Cromer and to have been found by a fisherman on the coast.
