Warrant appointing George Godfrey as Purser of HMS ASIA.
Warrant appointing George Godfrey as Purser of HMS ASIA, 1794. Signed by Admiral John Jervis, later Earl St Vincent (1735 - 1823) as Commander in Chief, Barbadoes and Leeward Islands, on the BOYNE, 26 April 1794. The ASIA had sailed from New York to join an unsucessful attempt by Jervis and troops led by Sir Charles Grey to retake Guadeloupe from the French, who had captured the island in March 1794. Pursers were paid less than warrant officers as they were expected to profit from their post, and had to put up a bond for the value of stores under their care.
