Administrative / biographical background
Frederick John Pike was born in 1872, the son of Robert Collins Pike, boatswain on HMS TOURMALINE. Robert Collins Pike died at sea in Antigua in 1878. Subsequently Frederick John and his younger brother Arthur Alfred both attended the Royal Naval School Greenwich; and Frederick joined the Royal Navy as a writer. The DAPHNE was deployed to the China Station. For some time prior to 1894 the Japanese had been modelling their navy on Britain’s Royal Navy. Britain had supplied advisors to the Japan whilst Japanese naval officers had visited Britain. Similarly, the Chinese Beiyang Fleet had a number of European advisors and many of its ships had been built in Britain.
