In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
(1) Our ship has buried a hundred men and sent more than that number sick on shore. I never saw the like mortality in one ship and hope never shall again. Most of my officers are sick and the Surgeon's Mate dead. The Surgeon is sick on shore at Torbay. (2) The ship is something tender with her bearing lying so high, a good girdling would do her a kindness. Most of our officers, except myself and Lieutenant Thathcher, are sick and cannot go about the deck. Account written by Captain Botham, Commander of the WARSPITE and Captain Thurston, Commander of the OXFORD.
