Diary by Robert Barnfield on board the ship NORTHUMBERLAND, December 1883-March 1884.
The diary describes the preparations for and the voyage from London to Auckland, New Zealand on board the clipper ship Northumberland operated by Shaw, Savill and Albion Company Ltd. There are desciptions of the accommodation, route travelled, other passengers and crew and places visited. There are also numerous pencil sketches by Barnfield of the ship, ship personnel and places visited as well as a self portrait on first page. There is also a printed plan of the saloon accommodation on the ship produced by Shaw, Savill & Albion Ltd. attached to the front cover.
