In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

This item bears three dates e.g. 16th, 17th and 20th October 1694 and deals with the Petition of Evan Thomas who is seeking a pension due to having been wounded on HM service. The Petition, which is on the reverse of the item, (see Item 204) bears no date but relates how Thomas was severely wounded at the Battle of Beachy Head when serving in the WINDSOR Castle. Appended in the margin is an instruction dated 16th October 1694 referring the Petition to the Navy Board for comment. There are six signatories including William Bridgeman, Secretary to the Admiralty Board. On the face of the item a note dated 17th October 1694 requests the Governors of the Chatham Chest to give their views on the matter and a report dated 20th October 1694 and signed by various Navy Board Commissioners establishes that the petitioner Thomas was not on board the WINDSOR CASTLE as he had claimed but in the CAMBRIDGE when wounded; and informs that he received only Hurt Money as compensation. It concludes by suggesting that the present Certificate is a counterfeit. Signed Samuel Bourne and three others, Navy Board Commissioners.
