Rodney Shirley, a collector and historian of early maps, explores the development, design and history of decorative cartographic title pages from the late 15th century onwards. Using a selection of 100 main and 70 supplementary specimens from around the world, the publication examines a range of different subject matters, iconographies, styles, formats, themes and national characteristics over a 400-year time period.
