Manchester Liners : an extraordinary story /by Nick Robins.
A history of Manchester Liners, which was created in 1898, with help from Sir Christopher Furness, to demonstrate the viability of the Manchester Ship Canal for liner traffic. From the outset its main area of activity was a seasonal service between Manchester and Montreal and St John, New Brunswick. Eventually the company sent its ships directly into the Great Lakes to load grain for Manchester. By 1980 the company had become a part of the Furness Withy Shipping Division. The book emphasises the role of Manchester Liners and the Manchester Ship Canal Company in creating wealth in north-west England during the 20th century. There are numerous black and white and colour photos, fleet lists and an index of ships' names.
