Fishing boats on the seashore
Born at Quimper in Britanny, Noël was a student of Cherioux at Brest. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1840 and continued until 1879. Although the location of the place depicted is not known, many of Noël's landscapes and marines were inspired by the Normandy coast which attracted many French artists in the 19th century. In works like this, the influence of Eugène Isabey (1803-86) is apparent. It is signed 'JULES NOEL' in the lower right corner.
