HMS Akbar Augst 4th 1815
This watercolour is part of a set of six (PAF5609-14) depicting the 'Akbar' in different weather conditions and on different dates throughout August and September of 1815. This shows the 'Akbar' on 4 August with her bow-starboard side facing towards the picture frame. She is fully rigged, the water is calm and she is bathed in a crystalline light. The print is signed by the artist on the mount at the lower right. George Back joined the 'Akbar' as midshipman in 1814, after having been a prisoner of war from 1809. Medium includes graphite.
