HMS Akbar Augst 31st 1815, in a storm, dismasted

This watercolour is part of a set of six (PAF5609-14) depicting the 'Akbar' in different weather conditions and on different dates throughout August and September of 1815. This shows the 'Akbar' on 31 August after sustaining heavy storm damage. Depicted from her starboard side, her main mast has fallen over her port side. The crew is shown frantically struggling with the damaged rigging. The print is signed by the artist on the mount on the lower right. George Back joined the 'Akbar' as midshipman in 1814, after having been a prisoner of war from 1809. Medium includes graphite.
