'The Breeze freshens and veers to the Southward'; illustration to Falconer's 'The Shipwreck' (1811 ed., p.51)
The fifth of a series of ten drawings, of which the NMM collection holds nine (PAF5913–PAF5921). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: 'The Steering Sails, &c. are taken in. The Yards braced to the Wind. Tacks on board, and Top-gallant-sails set: the Ship heeling to the press of Sail. The Water-Spout having passed her, is seen to Leeward dispersing. RETIMO [Rhethimon] on the left and MALACHA's foreland ahead'. Signed by the artist and dated, lower left. For further details see the first of the series, PAF5913: for an anonymous early copy of this one, better indicating its now faded original colour, see PAJ1644. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 37.
