'The Gale Increasing'; illustration to Falconer's 'The Shipwreck' (1811 ed., f. p. 63)
The sixth of a series of ten, of which the collection holds nine (PAF5913-21). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: 'The Ship much pressed. The Lee Gunwales in the water. Is reduced to her Courses. Some Seamen aloft furling the Topsails, others sending down the Top-gallant-yards. The Wind heads her and the Sea rises, Cape Spada no longer affording any shelter from it.' For further details see the first of the set, PAF5913: for an anonymous early copy of this one, better indicating its now faded original colour, see PAJ1645. The present drawing is also unusual among this Pocock 'Shipwreck' set in having a sketch of the frigates 'Blanche' and 'Thetis' engaging French frigates on the reverse. Signed by the artist and dated, lower left. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1976) no. 38.
