'The Consultation' [of Officers]; illustration to Falconer's 'The Shipwreck' (1811 ed. p.97)

The seventh of a series of ten drawings, of which the collection holds nine (PAF5913–PAF5921). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: 'Storm. The Ship laying to, under bare poles. The Chart is spread on the Cabin Table; ALBERT is describing on it the Ship's Track and Situation, with that of the adjacent Shores, and is consulting RODMOND and ARION on the expediency of veering the Ship and scudding before the Wind, which he is inclided to do. RODMOND dissents, and prefers the continuing to lay to. ARION appears to agree with ALBERT [...]. PALEMON, who is supporting himslef by the Mizen-Mast, listens ...and casts his eyes in dismay on his friend ARION'. Realistic cabin scenes or any sort are rare and this is a very good one, by a former seaman, of the interior of a merchant ship's main cabin, with the officers poring over a chart of southern Greece. Signed by the artist and dated 'Jany [?] 1810', lower right. For further details on 'The Shipwreck' see the first of the series, PAF5913. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1976) no. 39. Also NMM Flinders exhibition.
