'Tom beating down the Frenchman'. Original illustration for 'Poor Jack' by Capt Marryat
The original for an illustration in Captain Marryat's 'Poor Jack' (1840), Ch. 50, facing p. 369. It shows the Tom Saunders ('Poor Jack') the narrator of the tale beating down an escaping French privateersman and knocking him overboard with a handspike, after he and his pilot friend Bramble have recaptured their ship by confining the French prize crew below deck. (Confusingly, it is the only plate in the book captioned with the name 'Tom' rather than 'Jack' for the same character). See notes to PAF6068 for other drawings related.
