Quarter figures of the 'Zeven Provincien'
Quarter figure of the ‘Zeven Provincen’, 1665. The drawing shows a whole-length figure of a bearded sea-god with the left foot raised on a dolphin and holding with the right hand a round-bladed paddle. Below is a figure pouring water from a jar. It is inscribed ‘d seffe provensie’.
A rapid sketch in pencil strengthened with loose pen-work. It is dated by the watermark, but was possibly made a year later when the ship was first commissioned.
