Portrait of the 'Zeven Provincien'
The ‘Zeven Provincien’ viewed from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel are the arms of the United Provinces, on a crowned shield, surrounded by the arms of the seven provinces, all of which are supported by two lions. Above this is what may be a female figure and the date written in ink ‘anno 1665’.
This drawing by the Younger is signed in brown ink, ‘W.V.VJ’. It is a rapid sketch in pencil strengthened with loose pen work. It has been dated by the watermark, but Robinson believes it to possibly be a year later when the ship was first commissioned.
