The tafferel of the 'Wassenaar' 1666
A depiction of part of the tafferel of the ‘Wassenaar’, showing on it the arms of Wassenar, with an inescutcheon of the same arms, the whole of which is surrounded by the Order of the Elephant. Only the sinister supporter and a lion rampant are drawn in.
The colours have been noted as follows: the fields of the first and fourth quarters, ‘root’ (red); the fields of the second and fourth quarters ‘7’ (blue); the ‘fesses x’ (light yellow); the lion supporters ‘x’ (light yellow); the background of the tafferel ‘bruijn’ (brown); the scroll-work round the tafferel ‘brijn geel’ (brown and yellow); the side of the ship ‘light grau’ (light grey); and above, ‘0’ and ‘7’ (red and blue).
Below, between the slingerlijsts, are the crowned arms of the Admiralty of the Maas, a lion rampant on crossed anchors; the field ‘geel’ (yellow), and part of the stern ‘bruijn’ (brown); the crown ‘root geel’ (red and yellow).
This is an unsigned pencil drawing by the Younger. It is a rapid note of the coat of arms and has been approximately dated by the subject.
In the Ingram Collection (137) there is a drawing of the ‘Wassenaar’ done at the same time, showing that the dexter supporter was a dragon.
The ‘Duivenvoorde’, of which there is a drawing in the Victoria & Albert Museum (4709) shows a similar coat of arms, but the inscription bears only the three crescents, and the sinister supporter is a winged dragon.
