La Madonna di Lampedosa

Hand-coloured woodcut showing the seated Virgin with the infant Jesus on her lap blessing two fishing boats. Two men are kneeling on clouds by her side. Crows are flying above the boats.

The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands and is situated 200 km from Sicily. The Madonna di Lampedusa, also called the Madonna di Porto Salvo is the patron of fishermen. A shrine to the Madonna is situated in a small grotto. A procession in her honour is organised every year: a statue of the Madonna is carried on fishermen's shoulders from the grotto to the town's main church.
