Autumn Evening, Lowestoft, 1934

A drypoint etching of Lowestoft. The town encompasses the background of the piece, a view which is punctuated by masts. A large mass of logs sits in the foreground, and across the logs men are working and children are playing. Historically, Lowestoft was a fishing centre for herring and a popular seaside holiday resort. Signed by artist and in plate.

Born in Glasgow, Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) was a prominent London based printmaker and an official war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. Bone began practicing printmaking in the 1890s and moved to London in 1901.
