U.S. Frigate Cumberland, 54 guns. The flagship of the Gulf Squadron, Com. Perry

A hand-coloured print depicting 'Cumberland' fully rigged with sails unfurled from her port broadside. 'Cumberland' was a Raritan-class frigate designed by William Doughty, after older frigate designs, such as Constitution and Chesapeake. Doughty gave his frigates more guns than European designs and 'Cumberland' and her sister ships had a fully-armed spar deck, along with guns on the gun deck. The result was a heavily armed warship. A print made by Nathaniel Currier states on the inscription that she carried 54 guns. 'Cumberland' was the first ship sunk by the ironclad CSS Virginia.
