The photograph was taken from the deck of the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913). Aurora was based at Dover twice in July: 8-15 July, before returning to Harwich on 16 July 1916. She then returned to Dover on 21 July steaming back to Harwich on 29 July. [TNA, ADM 53/34495, ship's log].
