Universal equinoctial ring dial
Universal equinoctial ring dial for all latitudes. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The degree scale on the meridian ring is divided clockwise [90°]-0°-90°, and the scale for determining solar altitude is divided [0°]-90°. Both the obverse and reverse sides of the equinoctial ring are plain. There is a date scale on the bridge and the equinoxes are marked at 19 March and 23 September. The lack of any hour scale on the main faces of the ring is unusual.
Silver is not a common material for these dials and suggests a wealthy owner. Furthermore, the equinox dates imply that the original owner was from the Continent. It is signed 'I: Marke fecit' on the obverse side of the meridian ring.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
