A distant view of the torpedo boat destroyer HMS Tartar (1907) on full speed trials off Dunkirk.
A distant starboard near beam view, just forward of broadside of the torpedo boat destroyer HMS Tartar (1907) on full speed trial off Dunkirk. She is showing (faintly) her pendant number 'F' on the starboard bow. A dark stream of smoke is belching from her funnels.
The photograph was taken from the deck of the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913). Aurora went on patrol between Dover and Dunkirk on a number occasions: 10-11 July, 12-13 July, and 15 July, before returning to Harwich on 16 July 1916. She then returned to Dover on 21 July and patrolled off Dunkirk again on 22 July, 24-25 July and 28 July before returning to Harwich on 29 July. [TNA, ADM 53/34495, ship's log].
