Diptych dial

Diptych dial for latitude 40°-55° North. Rectangular wooden dial faced with paper, consisting of two leaves that fold flat when not in use. Leaf Ia contains a table of latitudes in two columns, listing towns in Europe. The table is surrounded by a decorative border with a wheatsheaf pattern, with another border at the bottom of the table. The leaf is discoloured with age. Leaf Ib has an oval vertical dial, designed for use at 50° North. There is a latitude scale for the adjustment of the string gnomon, bordered by a garland, with a flower on the meridian line. Floral motifs, painted orange and green, adorn the spandrels.

Leaf IIa features a compass with three concentric hour scales for a horizontal dial set around it. A string gnomon, adjustable for latitudes 38°-54° North, is attached between the inner surfaces of the two leaves. The compass is marked with eight points, named in German, and the magnetic variation is marked at 20° West of North. The needle has an arrow for North and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. The glass plate is held in place by a metal ring. Leaf IIb is blank. The leaves have a brass hook fastener and a brass hook to hold the leaves open. This dial is very similar in style to AST0150, made by David Beringer, and may have originated from the same workshop.
