This simple but atmospheric sketch may show a house or a barn in the countryside, or a building on the beach. The colour tests around the edge suggest that rather than being rapidly painted Wyllie’s approach was carefully considered. The foreground space is suggested by scraping the paint off the paper on the diagonal.
