Bracken
A watercolour drawing by William Lionel Wyllie. A large bracken (fern) occupies the foreground of the drawing, and is set against a pale grey ground. The surrounding landscape detail is minimal. The sky features a pale wash and lends the scene a wintery atmosphere. The fern’s coarse lobbed fronds are articulated by copper hues, while the undergrowth features a light green hue. The fronds emerging from the centre of the plant are defined by detailed brushwork, while the lower body of the plant showcases loose brushwork.
