Analemmatic dial
Analemmatic dial for latitude 52° North. This instrument comprises a normal horizontal dial with a string gnomon and also an elliptical dial with a vertical rod gnomon. The dial-plate is rectangular, its corners are cut away and it is set on four turned brass screw feet. The horizontal dial has six consecutive minute scales divided clockwise [0]-60 for each hour and an hour scale numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII. At the base of the string gnomon, a sunface is engraved with arrows radiating out from it along the hour-lines. The elliptical dial features an hour scale marked on an engraved ribbon numbered III-XII, I-IX. A raised brass strip is set along the meridian line and is divided solstice to solstice, marked by month and by zodiacal symbol. Down the middle there is a slit, within which a vertical rod gnomon moves and can be adjusted for declination. Leaf engraving decorates the North end of the elliptical dial.
The plumb-bob support is made of scrolled brass and has a brass plummet and a spherical bob. The support also acts as the anchor for the string gnomon (replacement) that is used with the main horizontal dial. There are some scratches on the dial-plate. The minute scales on this instrument allow the time to be read to the nearest minute on the horizontal dial. Since the elliptical dial can be adjusted only to the nearest 15 minutes, however, it is unlikely that the instrument could ever have been used with such accuracy.
