Valkyrie (1889)
A 12x10 negative. A distant port near broadside view, taken from just ahead of the beam, of the cutter rigged yacht Valkyrie (1889) under sail in Gravesend Reach, River Thames, when finishing a Royal London Yacht Club Match involving the yachts Yarana (1888) and Ibex (1888). She is in a following wind and is setting (from bow to stern): jib topsail, jib, staysail, balloon jib (later called balloon spinnaker/spinnaker), mainsail and what looks to be a jackyard topsail. The balloon jib is set to port and her mainsail is set to starboard. The Valkyrie (1889) came first, beating the Yarana (1888) by over 25 minutes. The race was from the Lower Hope down to the Nore, round the Mouse light vessel and back to Gravesend. The stern of the cable ship Scotia (1862) is on the left of the picture. Tilbury is in the background. Two corners are broken off the negative.
