String-gnomon dial

String-gnomon dial for latitude 53° North. This dial is contained in a circular brass case which has a brass lid with red velvet lining. The dial has a circular hour scale within which is an engraved pattern with animals and flowers and a silvered compass inscribed with four cardinal points marked by German initials (N, O, S, W). The magnetic variation is indicated by an arrow drawn 12° West of North. A brass strut for the attachment of the gnomon extends over the compass bowl. The hinged gnomon support folds flat when not in use, and is shaped and pierced for the brass plumb line and bob. A frayed string gnomon is attached between the gnomon support and dial-plate.

The German origin is implied by the use of German initials for the cardinal points of the compass and the style of numbering of the hour scale. Unlike other string gnomon dials, this one is not adjustable for different latitudes.
