Admiral Boscawen
A circular bust-length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711–1761) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Boscawen’, and the production details, ‘Ravenet sculpt.’ This print was engraved by Simon François Ravenet and published as an illustration in Tobias Smollett, ‘History of England from the Descent of Julius Caesar, to the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle, 1748’, 3rd edition (London: James Rivington, James Fletcher and R. Baldwin, 1760) volume 11, opposite page 299. The portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s full-length oil painting of 1755–57, now in the collection of Lord Falmouth. A nineteenth-century copy of Reynolds’s painting is in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2565). (Updated May 2019.)
