Captain James Cook. F.R.S
Print. This is a derivative print from an earlier one after William Hodges, dated 1777 (see PAD2893). The engraver signature of 'W. J. Strunck - Sculp. Amst' shows it was made in Amsterdam by an engraver born in 1764 and active there from 1782: he died in 1813. It has been suggested the plate was made in 1793, though on what grounds are not yet clear. The Museum lent this impression to NASA to carry in the United States Space Shuttle 'Endeavour' on its maiden flight (mission STS-49), which launched at 7.40 p.m. on 7 May 1992 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and returned on 16 May after 141 Earth orbits. PAD2891.1, now kept with the print, is a Certificate of Authenticity for the flight signed by the Commander, the Pilot and five Mission Specialists. [PvdM 4/24]
