Admiral Kempenfelt

An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Kempenfelt (1718–1782) in rear-admiral’s undress uniform, circa 1774–83. A thick oval frame surrounds the portrait, resting on a fictive plinth inscribed with the title: ‘Adml. Kempenfelt.’ Lettered below the image with the publication line: ‘Published April 27. 1786 by J. Fielding Pater noster Row.’ The portrait is derived from Tilly Kettle’s full-length oil painting of early 1782 (see BHC2818), which was engraved by Richard Earlom in October 1782 (see PAG7211). This print was published by John Fielding as an illustration in John Andrews’s ‘History of the War with America, Franca, Spain, and Holland, commencing in 1775 and ending in 1783’ (1785–6), volume 4 (opposite p. 294).
