Lord Viscount Keppel
Printed in red ink. An oval bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) in profile to right. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Lord Viscount Keppel’. Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Cerachi scul. in Marble / Mercuard Pupil to Mr. Bartolozzi sculp. / Pub’d as the Act directs May 1, 1782 by A. Torre No. 44 Market Lane.’ This portrait was engraved by Robert Samuel Marcuard (who was a pupil of the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi) after a marble bust sculpted by Giuseppe Ceracchi. The print was published on 1 May 1782. Ceracchi’s bust was finished in 1777 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year; it is now at Belvoir Castle. Another version of the bust dated 1779 is at Wentworth Woodhouse. (Updated May 2019.)
