Lord Viscount Duncan
A full-length portrait of Adam Duncan (1731–1804) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Camperdown and the sash and star of the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. He holds a telescope in his right hand and points with his left hand. He stands on the deck of a ship with a sailor and a cannon behind him and a burning ship in the background. The portrait alludes to the sitter’s victory over the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown on 11 October 1798. The burning ship may represent the Dutch ship ‘Hercules’, which caught fire during the battle. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Lord Viscount Duncan’. Also lettered with the production detail and publication line, ‘D. Orme Pinxt. / Orme Execd. / Turner sculpt. / Sold & Publish’d March 1st 1798 by Mr Orme 23 Holles Street Cavendish Sqe. & E. Orme 25 Conduit Stt. Hanover Sqe.’ This portrait was engraved by Charles Turner after an oil painting by Daniel Orme, who also published the print together with his brother Edward Orme. Daniel Orme was a miniaturist and engraver, who in 1792 became the impresario of a history painting and print-publishing business. Initially, he worked in collaboration with the American artist Mather Brown, who produced paintings of recent events which Orme then engraved and published, the pair dedicating themselves to the representation of military and naval subjects. Orme referred to his Holles Street exhibition room and print shop as the ‘British Naval and Military Gallery’ and continued to operate under this title after his partnership with Brown dissolved sometime around 1797, at which point Orme took on the role of painter as well as engraver and publisher. One of his first solo projects was a representation of Duncan’s victory at the Battle of Camperdown, completed in 1799 (see BHC3100). While he was at work on his painting of the victory, Orme created two portraits of the admiral, both of which were engraved and published – one was a miniature (see PAD3075) and the other was this full-length.
