Mungo Park
Print depicting Mungo Park.
Mungo Park (1771–1806) was one of the first Europeans to travel into the African interior. In 1795 he was sent by the London-based African Association to discover the course of the Niger River. Like many explorers of Africa his primary concern was the geography of the continent and especially its rivers. His investigations came to an abrupt end in 1805 when he was drowned at the Bussa rapids.
