Admiral, Earl St Vincent. From a Portrait by Hoppner in His Majesty's Collection
Hand-coloured. A half-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Cape St Vincent. He holds a telescope close to his body in his right hand and tucks his left in his sash. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Earl St. Vincent. From a Portrait by Hoppner in His Majesty’s Collection.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘W. Greatbatch sculpt. / London, Richard Bentley 1836.’ This portrait was engraved by William Greatbatch after John Hoppner’s full-length portrait of 1808–9. Hoppner’s painting was commissioned by the Prince of Wales (later George IV) for his residence at Carlton House. It was displayed by William IV at St James’s Palace in the 1830s, when this print was made from the painting, and it remains in the Royal Collection to this day. Greatbatch’s print was published by Richard Bentley in 1836. (Updated June 2019.)
