John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent. OB.1823. From the Original of Hoppner, in His Majesty's Collection
A three-quarter-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and a naval gold medal for the Battle of Cape St Vincent. He holds a telescope over his stomach with both hands and stands beside a gun carriage on the deck of a ship as smoke billows around him. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative border, which incorporates the sitter’s coat of arms at the top and the engraver’s name and title of the print at the bottom: ‘Engraved by H. Robinson. / John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent. OB.1823. From the Original of Hoppner, in His Majesty’s Collection.’ Also lettered beneath the image with the publication line: ‘John Tallis & Company, London & New York.’ This portrait was engraved by John Henry Robinson after John Hoppner’s full-length portrait of 1808–9. Hoppner’s painting was commissioned by the Prince of Wales (later George IV) for his residence at Carlton House. It was displayed in St James’s Palace by William IV in the 1830s, when this print was made, and remains in the Royal Collection. The painting represents St Vincent on the deck of his flagship, the ‘Victory’, 100 guns, at the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797, when his fleet defeated the Spanish. The print was published by John Tallis and Co. It is a reprint, with added decorative border, of the plate originally published by Harding and Lepard in 1830 as an illustration in Edmund Lodge’s ‘Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain’ (London: Harding and Lepard, 1834), volume 12.
