Lieutenant William Pringle Green, 1783-1846
Print. This is a detached copy of the frontispiece to Green's 'Fragments…on electricity, magnetism, aeroliths, and various other phenomena of nature' (1833). The pose and detail of the models of Green's various inventions on the table suggest the original drawing is likely to have been a self-portrait, since he did have modest artistic talent. It bears the MS inscription: 'Likeness of Lieutenant Wm Pringle Green RN. He was a Mate of HMS Conqueror at the memorable battle of Trafalgar and promoted for his conspicuous bravery in that renowned action. He was selected by the Duke of Kent as his Royal Highness's Aide-de-Camp on his voyage from Halifax N.S. to England on board HMS Topaze'. If this is true - and the Duke (d. 1820) was certainly his early patron - it would have been while Green was a midshipman or master's mate in 1798. He held the latter rank in the 'Conqueror' at Trafalgar, of which he left a brief illustrated account now in NMM JOD/48, with other MS and printed papers. These include the first part (24pp) of 'Fragments', which was all that appears to have been published, but without the partly autobiographical introduction and full contents list that exists in the BL copy, for example. It also lacks the frontispiece, though a (trimmed) copy is loosely inserted. PAF3663 is another and PAD6004 a detached copy of Plate II. PAI2694F is an 1812 sheet for Green's hand-signal system, of which JOD/48 contains the (undated) printed booklet version. For a miniature of him as a younger man see MNT0118. [PvdM 10/09]
