Sir Edward Hamilton Kt
An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Hamilton (1772–1851) in captain’s (over three years) uniform, 1795–1812, with the naval gold medal that he received for the recapture of the Hermione from the Spanish on 25 October 1799. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘Sir Edward Hamilton Kt.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘Thompson pinx. / Ridley sc. / Pub. by Bunney & Gold. Shoe Lane. Feb. 1. 1801.’ This print was engraved by William Ridley after a portrait by William Thompson. It was published by Joyce Gold and John Bunney as an illustration in volume 5 of the ‘Naval Chronicle’ (January–June 1801) opposite page 1, together with ‘Biographical Memoirs of Sir Edward Hamilton, Knight’ (pp. 1–12).
