Print. George William Manby was a militia captain and the barrack master at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (from 1803). He invented the line-firing mortar known as the 'Manby apparatus' for saving lives from ships wrecked close to shore. It was first successfully used at Yarmouth in 1808 and rapidly became widespread.
